2008 Summer Reading Program is Here!

Get your collecting jar, grab your butterfly net, it's time to "Catch the Reading Bug!" this year's theme for Danville Public Library's Summer Reading Program (SRP).

Registration for this popular series of programs begins on Saturday, June 7 from 11 am to 5 pm. All ages are welcome and are encouraged to register, but you do not have to sign up to attend the weekly programs.

"Exotic Animals from around the World" is the kick off program on Thursday, June 12 from 1 pm to 2 pm at St. Luke's Community Center behind the Catholic Church in Danville. Educators from the Columbus Zoo will bring exotic birds, a dingo and other animals for an up close and personal look. The audience will learn about their habitats and behaviors, and will have an opportunity to ask questions.

Thursday, June 19: Craft Day--Participants will learn to make bug hats, picture frames, pin or magnet praying mantis, and face painting.

Thursday, June 26: Magical Entertainer Greg Carson -- Greg's combination of magic, comedy, and mystery is guaranteed to generate laughter and fun.

Thursday, July 10th: Bug Man--A hands on interaction with live bugs.

Thursday, July 17th: Closing of SRP--Cookies, punch for all and free books to those who completed their contracts. These programs are free and open to the public. All programs are family oriented, are held at St. Luke's Community Center, and sponsored by the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County.

The Gambier and Danville Public Libraries' Summer Reading Programs will feature Magical Entertainer Greg Carson who will entertain children of all ages with his brand of magic, comedy and mystery, on Wednesday, June 25 from 10 am to 11 am at the Gambier Library, and on Thursday, June 26 from 1 pm to 2 pm at St. Luke's Community Center in Danville.

This is Carson's third year of performing for SRP and according to Manager Betty Durbin "the kids love him. He keeps them interested, has them actively participate and engaged the entire hour. He brings out the kid in all of us, and that's why we ask him back."

This program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County.

As a public service institution, the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County exists solely to promote the cultural, intellectual, educational, and recreational welfare of the Knox County community. Its primary method of fulfilling that role is to collect, preserve and make easily available to its patrons books, periodicals, pamphlets, recordings, videos, compact discs, tapes and other materials, both print and non-print, to serve their informational, educational, and recreational needs.

We invite everyone in to come in and experience what we have to offer at either our main branch here in Mount Vernon or at any of our other branches in Danville, Fredericktown, and Gambier. There are often events scheduled for young and old alike.
We would also like to extend an invitation to all of our patrons to become even more deeply involved with their public library. This can be done through either of two great programs, Friends of the Library and as a Volunteer.
