KnoxNet Hardware Requirements

The following is some basic information about the hardware and software you need to connect to KnoxNet. Please be aware that the minimum specifications noted below are just that: minimum. In general, the more recent the model of your computer, the better will your experience with KnoxNet be, especially when it comes to displaying graphics. This is because more recent computers have faster processors and greater amounts of main memory (RAM), which are required for the high-speed transmission of graphics and multimedia files.

You are responsible for having the appropriate communications software installed on your computer and for knowing how to use it. Consult your computer user's manual for more information. There are many beginner-level books available on using computers, communications software, and the internet. You can find them in bookstores, office supply stores, and your public library. KnoxNet does have limited help available.

Modems:

Your modem (the device that connects your computer to the telephone line) must run at 9600 baud or faster.
Warning: modems running at less than 28,800 bps may cause your graphical connection to be very slow.

Most, if not all, models of Zoom modems will NOT connect to KnoxNet's systems. If you can turn off error correction and data compression on your Zoom modem, you may be able to get it to work. If not, we suggest you visit a local computer dealer to buy a modem that adheres to industry standards.
