Community Book Discussion: Fahrenheit 451
On Thursday, September 22 at 7:00pm: The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County and PEN America present the 2022 Banned Books Week capstone event, a community discussion of Fahrenheit 451. Panelists Jeff Gottke, John K. Chidester, Abby Erler and Julia Warga will discuss topics raised in Ray Bradbury’s classic tale. Often regarded as one of his best works, the novel presents a future dystopian America where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found. The novel follows Guy Montag, a fireman who begins to read in secret and discovers an underground rebellion determined to protect literature. Fahrenheit 451 is a book that has often been the target of book bans, and raises issues central to Banned Books Week’s annual celebration of the freedom to read.
The panel discussion will take place in Ariel Foundation Park’s Knox County Foundation Pavilion at 10 Pittsburgh Avenue, in Mount Vernon. Advance registration is required, but as with all Library programs, this event is free and open to the public.
Patrons interested in reading Fahrenheit 451 can pick up a free copy of the book at the Main Library after September 1, while supplies last. For more information about Banned Books Week events, visit www.knox.net, email [email protected] or call (740) 392-BOOK ext. 259.
